Shapefiles for OC Transpo Data

For citizens to be able to map and visualize routes/the OC Transpo network, shapefiles are the easiest way to import to any GIS reader. The CSV files provide a lot of extra data (stops, arrival times, etc), but don't give a super clear look at the shape of the routes or the network.

GTFS feed for upcoming route changes

The GTFS file for the current transit routes is posted on the Open Data portal. However, OC Transpo plans route changes well in advance... They have already announced what is coming on October 6. It would be great if the open data portal has both the "Current" and "Future" transit files. This way consumers can prepare ahead of when the changes are actually launched.

Easy flow groceries

This would be a part of an application that tells you when busy times are at grocery/retailers stores. The idea would be to have stores share their store layout (map) and where their products are in the diagram. (make sure all items remain in the same place) The user then would add random items on their shopping cart and once done, it would organize all the items in sequence where the shopper can enter the store and pick up the items in order. This will avoid shoppers wondering around looking for items and cutting down on the amount of time the shopper spends inside. I only have the idea someone would have to integrate this idea into an application.

Proposed
More details for collision events involving cyclists or pedestrians.

The city maintains two datasets of collision data. One (allcollisions) indicates detail such as weather conditions, lighting, etc. The other (collisionsbyfrequency) provides a talley of how many cyclists and pedestrians are involved in a collision. These sets should be joined, or a new data set created, so that we can query all collisions involving bike or cyclists and see useful details associated with the accident.

Proposed
Add counts or flags of age/gender to collision data

Previously, someone had an idea to add more data to the collision dataset, the idea wasn't accepted because you want to keep one collision = one entry. I want to reiterate the idea, but within this requirement you have set. I'd like to take age / gender and using categorical variables assign a count or a flag to each collision. So, you'd still have 2 cars, 5 persons but a further breakdown of 2 men, 1 woman, and 2 children. For example. Or, if that is too hard, just simply a flag for whether or not the collision involved injured children. There, still have one collision = one entry but that extra information can be incorporated.

Proposed
Mandatory Yearly Bicycle License and Registration Fees

Just like anyone that has the privilege to own a vehicle it must be licensed, registered and insured which helps the economy for maintaining, repairing and creating roadways. Many cyclists ride without proper safety precautions, lights at night, no reflectors, darting in and out of traffic, not using proper HTA rules at stop signs, red lights, etc. Some cyclists will ride in the middle of the traffic lanes impeding vehicles stuck behind them. I understand that cycling is great exercise, causes no pollution and is a great way to get around but it's been my experience as a professional driver that I see more cyclists abusing their right of way even though the City has spent and is spending a lot of money which as a tax payer we all have to pay for. In order to lessen the tax increases for those of us that do not use or rarely use cycling to get around then why not input a yearly license and registration fee specifically for cyclists so they can enjoy and adhere to all the same HTA rules motorists are required to do. The fees collected would be used to help produce, maintain and repair bicycle lanes for all cyclists and possibly help ensure they follow and practice the same motor vehicle rules which I believe could help everyone on the roads.

Add Parcel Geometry to Address File

I've seen that we can't have shape files for existing structures or where precisely property boundaries lie, but can we have just the parcel geometry data available as a data set? Digitize the Tax Roll Bools

The tax roll books are already available for public viewing at City Hall Laurier however they are not accessible in any modern sense of the word. The public cannot access these electronically, take picture, or photocopies and are limited to taking hand notes. The level of protection for public information is inconsistent with the principles of the Ontario Open Data Directive "When government data can be made available to the public, it will be released over the internet in an open format, at no charge to the user, and will be released under the Open Government Licence – Ontario (see Appendix A) and/or a similar open licence where appropriate." Where 'open format' means "a set of specifications used to store and transmit digital data that is platform independent, machine-readable, vendor-neutral, standardized where possible, and made available to the public without restrictions that would impede the re-use of that data." Emphasis on 'machine readable'. Thank you for your consideration

Each traffic light operates according to a ruleset that determines when it switches. Ottawa Property Tax Data

The idea here is for radical transparency around property taxes. Publish a data set for residential addresses and the property taxes paid for the address. Ideally the data set would also include ward information and then a breakdown of the property taxes, but to start the total property tax paid would be great. This data would allow researchers to identify the amounts that wards pay in property taxes and provide a comparative analysis against wards that generate tax dollars and wards that don’t.

Real time traffic accident data

The city should release real-time traffic accident data. Occasionally, (usually during a winter storm) the Ottawa Police will announce on twitter how many traffic accidents have been reported so far that day. I would like to get consistent real-time access to that data to provide useful information about how dangerous each day's commute is. I run the @YOW_Weather twitter account that uses real-time weather data to produce alerts and I would like to use real-time traffic accident data to do the same thing. This could be very useful information to allow people to decide whether they should drive during any particular winter storm.

Annual Financial Statements Since 2001

As of now, the Annual Financial Statements page (https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/budget-finance-and-corporate-planning/financial-reports-and-statements/annual-financial-statements) goes as far back as the year 2020. However, it has also shown links to the 2018 and 2019 statements. If there's no interest in putting up the links to the older statements there, there should be another way to access these documents. The online archives tool has been retired due to a lack of accessibility compliance, so access to these documents remains inaccessible online until a newer solution is introduced.

Super nice to see the 2022 election results and geography up so quickly, thanks folks. It would be nice to have a precinct polygons to go with the data (I realize the dissolve of the voting subdivision layer is not too tricky, but still a barrier) It would also be nice to have the precinct number on the results table in its own field (separate from the voting place) to make the join between geography and result easier.

Proposed
Revenue per property (or equivalent)

The city collects taxes on all private properties in order to fund city services. While the aggregate municipal tax revenue is reported in the annual budgets, the breakdown of municipal tax levied by property (or related but less accurate information such as assessed land value, assessed building value etc) is not easily available at scale, even for previous tax years. Ideally, this information would be added to the Municipal Address Points Dataset. One potential use of this information is to compare the amount of tax levied per property to the size (area) of property to determine the financial productivity and health of the city.

Public Transit: accurate, detailed and in near real time

Public mass transit is the lifeblood of any major city. Its full adoption solves so many headache woes for the growing city. In a effort to arm users of open data to visualize, develop for, analyze, measure the quality and growth of our services. It is important that this data is produced and maintained from an accurate and reliable common source. While there issues surrounding exporting that data, I feel that having this data set exposed in near real time will allow for the start of development of a host of improvements to ridership. As well as more informed and accurate discussions about reliability and service quality. Having this data in both solid form, as well as a event broadcasting API (which can be build by us/others) would allow for users of this data to provide real time responses to bus cancellations/rerouts/name changes/ect. The trickle down of this can play into a host of other applications, including: - Realtime routing - Alerts - Service notifications - Urban desirability indexes - People/Traffic flow analyzation - Road use/lifespan indexs or any data analyzation that benefits from accurate bus location and travel. I recommend the following fields: { ReportTimeStamp, TypeOfReport, // info notice, cancellation, maintenance request, etc. BusID, IsRemote, // Flag for reports that are reported on behalf of a bus, / or have no location data GPS: { // Location of the bus when the report was made Lat, Long }, // Important fields for why and perhaps how (as a later follow up field). Powered by a enumerated list of standard choices. why: { ReasonType: Text: // The important idea here is to mark nearly exactly why, rather then a generic "cancellation" or "information". This is important so that we can split the data along lines. For example not all "cancellations" are cancellations. Every time a bus changes its name or route, in some datasets its considered cancelled, because the bus "stopped" and its "gone". But in reality, that bus and its driver is flying a

Sidewalks potholes orange flagged by city staff for repair and those repaired

City staff place orange paint around sidewalk potholes when they notice them. Those ones are then noted for asphalt repair somewhere. It would be nice to get that data out into the public. The data doesn't need to be exact GPS. Block level data would be fine. As a community association, we are trying to to encourage more walking in our neighbourhood. It would help us know the state of sidewalks by knowing where city staff have noted potholes and where they have been repaired in the past year. Right now, I can only tell the status of sidewalk I have personally walked. The city staff rating of condition would be useful - excellent, good or poor. with all poor rates marked as recently repaired or repair pending. Typically poor rates means there is an accessibility concern and that the side walk will be difficult to plow.
